Aimed at undergraduates with one year of study remaining, we offer three eight-week programmes during July and August.

Our internships provide first-class training and work experience, enabling you to gain an understanding of what the role of an Actuary, Pensions, Investment or Insurance Consultant at Barnett Waddingham looks like.

Working with us

We have three summer internship programmes aimed at undergraduates entering their final year of their study. At the end of the programme, you may be offered a role on one of our graduate programmes starting the following year.

Working across our Actuarial, Public Sector and Employer Consulting teams (depending on location), you will be given real responsibility to contribute to client work, actuarial calculations and projects. You will receive training and a thorough induction at the start of the programme, enabling you to get real insight into the work of being an actuary in the defined benefit consulting space.

Working within our Investment Consulting team, you will be contributing to client work whilst learning from industry specialists and leaders. You will also receive comprehensive training which will allow you to get involved in other projects, such as investment research. Through the programme, you will receive a real insight into how we help our vast range of clients (including pension schemes, corporates, charities, endowments and more) achieve their investment objectives. 

Working in our Insurance and Longevity Consulting team, you will gain experience across our Life Insurance, General Insurance and Longevity teams. You have the opportunity to contribute to client work, undertake research and participate in training to give you a high level understanding of the insurance industry projects we work on.

What to expect on our Actuarial Consulting internship

On this internship programme, you will get a real-life insight into the roles of an actuary. There is a lot to gain by joining our programme as you’ll be working on several projects and experiencing numerous aspects of the work that our actuaries carry out. You will get involved with a variety of work, including:

  • Calculating member benefits to help to develop your pension knowledge  
  • Data analysis and calculations to help develop your Excel best practice and knowledge 

  • Learn about how a pension is valued, the time value of money and how we calculate members mortality  

  • Learning about liability management strategies to reduce risk 

  • Learning about how actuaries support management decision analytics  

What to expect on our Investment Consulting internship

On this internship programme, take a deep dive into the role of an investment consultant.through your work on a variety of projects. Typical experiences include:

  • Producing reports that cover how investments have performed 

  • Assisting with investment manager research 

  • Assisting with investment strategy design work

What to expect on our Insurance and Longevity Consulting internship

On this summer internship programme, you will spend time in our Life Insurance, General Insurance and Longevity teams to make sure you have a good overview of the variety of services we offer to our clients. You will get involved with a variety of work including:

  • Learning about insurance, insurers’ processes and financial requirements 

  • Learning about and assisting with a range of actuarial modelling 

  • Carrying out data processing to investigate mortality experience and develop industry-wide tables 

  • Learning about and being given hands-on training on how to programme in a range of software, including R and Excel, whilst testing and developing internal tools to make work more effective and efficient

Future qualifications

For graduates joining our Trainee Consultant programme within our Actuarial Consulting, Public Sector Consulting and Insurance and Longevity Consulting team, we support the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) fellowship qualification. 

For those joining our Investment Consulting team, a choice between the IFoA and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) qualification is possible.
