Checkmate your endgame liabilities: webinar series
Steering your DB scheme towards endgame, considering the benefits and drawbacks of each option is a challenging task.
Throughout November 2024, we delivered three 30-minute webinars on different defined benefit (DB) endgame topics, featuring guest speakers from Law Debenture, to help you make the best decision on the direction of your scheme.
Session 1
Unlocking value in your DB surplus
Maximising member and sponsor benefits through strategic fund allocation.
Wednesday 6 November
With more schemes in surplus than we’ve seen in over 20 years, can that surplus be utilised to extract greater value for members and sponsors of DB schemes? Rather than transferring the assets to a third party, we explore how investing them – ‘re-returning’ against a backdrop of de-risking - could generate additional surplus. We also analyse the key factors involved in deciding whether to continue running on a DB scheme and how any surplus may be distributed.
Speakers
-
Matt Tickle, Partner and Chief Investment Officer at Barnett Waddingham (BW)
-
Reena Tanna, Principal and Senior Investment Consultant at BW
-
Andy Harrison, Director at Law Debenture
Session 2
Mastering the art of alternative risk transfer
Harnessing external capital to accelerate your scheme’s endgame.
Wednesday 13 November
We’re now one year on from the first Clara transaction. This session explores the lessons learnt from the process, the member experience and how the alternative risk transfer space may develop. We analyse why the ‘flood gates’ haven’t yet opened despite the first two transactions and what could set this alight. The group also consider how the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) consultation may change the landscape and how this could interact with the funding code.
Speakers
-
Richard Gibson, Partner and Head of Alternative Risk Transfer at BW
-
Rod Goodyer, Partner and Head of Investment Consulting at BW
-
Lynne Rawcliffe, Professional Trustee at Law Debenture
Session 3
Security in a shifting landscape: the insurance solution
Deliver certainty by transitioning your pension scheme to an insurer.
Wednesday 20 November
Despite all the talk of surpluses and alternative transactions, the buy-in and buyout market remains buoyant. In this session, we explore why the pensions industry still needs the insurance market, why it’s important to pay a premium for insurance protection and how insurers price and manage risk so that members and sponsors benefit from added security.
