Spotlight on Longevity December 2012: Update on revised population estimates
The 2011 Census led to a significant reduction in population estimates at high ages (80+). In order to reconcile the 2001 and 2011 Census-based estimates, the recently-published revised series of population estimates for 2002-10 implicitly assumes a material level of emigration at high ages.
This is at odds with the general pattern of migration with age and is not supported by migration data.
